Brian is an Exeter based artist. He studied the American Expressionists, Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwelll and later, European abstract artists. The paintings here are part of a series of garden paintings inspired by Monty Don’s ‘Around the World in Eighty Gardens’.
’I have always been interested in gardens …watching the first programme I was suddenly awakened and energised what I was seeing. The effect was profound and inspirational and the first paintings I did as a result saw a distinctive change to the way I dealt with the abstract image. Gone was the linear and in came a blurry margin layer of colour’ Brian says. Ethereal might be more sympathetic term than ‘blurry’ … the paintings conjure the essence of what it is to be in the garden: the colours: the shapes, smells and sounds that spark emotion and memory’ (except from Western Morning news by Simon Parker).
