Choosing a course
You may be undecided as to which workshop, course or lesson would suit you best. This page should help you make that decision so you can be confident you are going to get exactly what you’re looking for! Just call us for a chat if you still can’t decide.
What skill level is required for our courses?
Most of our courses are designed for all abilities unless stated. Enthusiasm, interest, a sense of humour and willingness to learn is all that is required.
From absolute beginners to more experienced we cater for all.
How big are the classes?
Classes are no more than six. We find working one-to-one with you within a small group is best for you so we can give you the individual time you need and allows you to work at your own pace. Being in a small group means that you can make new friends, bounce ideas of one another and have more fun.
What type of people come on art courses?
All types of people of all ages from varied locations, from all walks of life and backgrounds come to our courses. A love of art, learning, creating and experimenting unifies most of our students.
I am interested in working on my GCSE art portfolio. Can you help?
Certainly, we have successfully helped many others to prepare for their exams and to improve their portfolios.
I am interested in applying to an art college. Can you help?
Yes, of course we can. We have successfully helped others who have gone on to complete degrees.Organising a portfolio and learning how to produce meaningful and coordinated sketchbooks can be difficult. We can offer support and advice.
I’m an artist, are the courses suitable for me?
All artists work through practice; our tutors are constantly learning new skills and techniques. Discussions and methods of working are continuously developing. Courses can provide valuable time to explore new approaches and meet like-minded artists. We learn more by working alongside others than we do on our own.
How much time is spent working indoors and how much on location?
This depends on the length and type of course, and the weather! Most of our courses involve working both on location and in our studios. We want to give you as rich an experience as possible.
Can I visit before I attend the course?
Definitely! We encourage it.We will always be around, just ring in advance. Full details of all our courses are on the web-site.
Are your courses suitable for disabled people?
Whilst we have tried as far as is reasonably possible to make our workshop accessible to everyone, it is an old building and the toilet facilities are up some stairs. Please call us to discuss your requirements.
Do you supply all materials or can I bring my own?
We stock some of the materials you are likely to need and basic stock is included in the price of most courses and workshops. Please feel free to bring any unusual or special materials you might want to use or try out. Make sure you read the separate requirements in the course details can vary.
What do I need to bring with me?
It’s a good idea to bring a bag suitable for carrying materials in when we’re out on location. Make sure it’s big enough to carry an A4 sketchbook or bigger if you prefer. If you have a portfolio bring it to keep your work in especially if you intend to come by train, otherwise a carrying tube is good for carrying paper. Bring a pair of flat shoes suitable for walking in, especially if you like to walk on the moors. A hat or sun glasses are advisable in the summer months as well as a thin jacket/waterproof. In the spring and autumn a warm hat, gloves and a jacket/waterproof.
What refreshments are provided?
We offer light refreshments on all our workshops and courses, such as tea, coffee, soft drinks, biscuits and cakes.
Full day courses include a light buffet lunch and non-alcoholic beverage at the local inn. If you have food intolerances or allergies just let us know.
I am travelling from a different area and need to find somewhere to stay can you suggest anywhere?
Of course, we have a page on the website of local ‘accomodation’. Whilst these are suggestions, and we have included a range to suit all budgets, we do not get involved with your organisation of accommodation : you will have to contact them directly. We do not offer recommendations but rest assured if you call us with requirements we can specifically suggest ones that will meet your needs.
